On Friday 25th of November, we met with our local Labour MP for Ilford North, Wes Streeting, to discuss our concerns about Brexit as part of hundreds of thousands of 38 Degrees members who’ve take part in the DIY Brexit campaign.
Wes thought is was really valuable that 38 Degrees has encouraged and empowered people to get more involved with politics and contact their MPs. We all contacted eachother beforehand and agreed that our main points in the meeting would be the NHS, the economy and human rights.
Wes talked to us about how he is against further privatisation of the NHS and informed us of his work organising a march to protest against the cuts to the King George hospital A&E department. We spoke of the importance of EU citizens from other EU countries keeping our NHS going. He used the example of the 6000 nurses originally from Portugal who are employed in local hospitals.
People’s rights and the scary rise in racism and hate crime were also high on our agenda. Wes wants to make reporting hate crime easier and encourage people to come forward if they have been affected. For EU citizens who have made their life in the UK, he is keen to give people certainty and not treat people as a bargaining tool in negotiations.
Meeting my MP for the first time felt empowering and proactive. It was great to have my say and be part of DIY Brexit.
